Discover one of Austria’s most popular desserts – Kaiserschmarren – straight from the kitchen of our Sonnenterrasse apartment house in Fiss. This airy delicacy is generously dusted with powdered sugar and traditionally served with cranberries, apple sauce or stewed plums. Kaiserschmarren is not only a culinary highlight from Tyrolean cuisine, but also a piece of genuine Austrian culture and history.
Historic pleasure from Austria
Named after the famous Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I (whose culinary penchant for sweets is legendary), Kaiserschmarren is deeply rooted in Austrian food culture. It is not only served to our guests on the idyllic alpine pastures of the Tyrolean mountains, but is also prepared with great enthusiasm by all Tyroleans at home.
This dish not only symbolizes the warm hospitality of the region, but also a deeply rooted Tyrolean cooking tradition that is loved and revered by locals and guests alike.
A creation as charming as the dish itself
There are many legends about the origins of Kaiserschmarren, but one anecdote is particularly popular:
One day, an imperial chef failed to make a pancake batter that tore when he turned it. In a moment of quick improvisation, the cook cut the pancake into pieces, dusted it with powdered sugar and presented the result to the emperor, who exclaimed with delight: “Tell me! What kind of mess is that?”. The shrewd servant promptly replied: “Your Majesty, it’s a Kaiserschmarr’n!”. This is how a kitchen mishap became one of Austria’s most famous desserts.
